When your looking for the best quality portable basketball hoops its not any different than buying anything else, quality tends to cost more, and lesser quality systems are sold in volume to make up for their smaller profit margin. Here at at Basketball-Goals.com we give you the information you'll need to make an informed decision. It is important to know the ingredients necessary to make up the best portable hoops. Your fist consideration should be stability. Without stability you'll never get the great ball response your looking for. In order to provide stability in commercial portable systems and some commercial/residential hybrid systems, concrete blocks are added to the ballast box to acheive stability. In most cases residential basketball systems have you fill a base with either sand or water. Always choose sand by the way it weighs more by volume than water and water can break a plastic base due to expansion and contraction in cold weather conditions. You'll want to get a base large enough that will allow you to fill it with enough sand to create the stability needed for the system to work properly. We recommend a base that will allow you to fill it with 500 lbs. of sand. This will provide excellent stability for the portable hoop and allow the backboard to deliver better ball response than that of a system with a smaller base. There are other considerations such as backboard material, size, rim type, and esthetics, but unless you have a stable system those other considerations will never deliver their maximum potential.
