Before Selecting Portable Basketball Equipment Please Read the excerpt below It is important to note that the base portion of institutional basketball systems vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and before you make a selection for a portable basketball goal you should first determine how much space is available in your facility to accommodate a portable basketball system. Measure the distance from the out of bounds baseline of your court to the nearest wall or obstruction and this is the amount of available space your facility has to accommodate a portable basketball system. To determine how much space a particular basketball system will take up, add the length of the base to the runnout of the system and subtract 4 feet. This dimension is the space you'll need to properly position a portable goal. The "runnout" is the distance from the face of the backboard to the front of the base of the portable system. We subtract 4 feet from the equation above to allow for the backboard to be positioned the regulation 4 feet into the playing area of the court. For example the: First Team Storm Arena has a runnout of 5.5 feet (distance from face of backboard to front of base), the total length of the base is 6.5' add these two dimensions together = 12' and subtract 4' = 8'. Therefore your facility will need a space of at least 8' from the baseline to the nearest wall or obstruction to properly position the unit. See below for more info. Portable Basketball Systems |
Selecting Portable Basketball Equipment continued from above: The instructions above are correct for sizing your portable basketball system for regulation sized courts, however unless your facility will be host to sanctioned play such as NCAA, or NFHS play, then the 4' distance from the baseline to the face of the backboard rule isn't entirely necessary, so long as the distance from the foul line to the backboard remains 15' your backboard can be positioned anywhere from the baseline to the 4' regulation depth into the playing area of the court..
